What can I say about Asher's first birthday. I tried, I failed, and from now on all birthday's in our house will come with an ice cream cake purchased from somewhere. I don't have any talent when it comes to baking, especially when I am called upon to decorate that baking. I found some pictures online of some monkey cupcakes that looked easy enough, like something I might be able to pull off. I gave it my best shoot. I thought they turned out to look like bears, Zoe thought dogs, and Asher couldn't have cared less (which was a good thing). They ate them happily enough, so that's really what counts right.
Besides Asher had very little interest in any part of the birthday celebration. Zoe on the other hand was right in the middle of everything, blowing out his candle, opening (and claiming) his presents, etc.....
I have come to accept that I am never going to be one of those mother's who throws a Martha Stewart perfect birthday party.
Now the fun part of this post, a little about Asher:
Asher has been a very fun baby (except when he was teething). He is such a giggler. He laughs and giggles over everything. In fact this trait is impairing his ability to walk. He can walk. I have seen go for a few fairly long stretches, but when he realizes what he is doing he starts to giggle, and then falls over. No matter how many times I tell him to take it seriously he just can't. My poor children didn't have any chance of inheriting coordination from either parent, so they are already gross motored skilled challenged. Combine that with the giggling and we are still waiting for him to start walking everywhere without his walker toy. Amazingly enough he can run with that toy, and does so all day long all over the house.
He has the most mischievous smile when he's about to do something he shouldn't.
He has never been a cuddler. In fact he didn't like to be held even as a newborn, but now during the day every once in a while he will come over to me and want to be held for a few seconds. I love it.
He had twelve teeth when he turned one (two months later and he is now working on number fourteen). He wanted to make his dentist father proud, but oh!!! his poor mother. (His pediatrician joked that since he already had four molars at one he must be eating steak with his dad. It was only a slight exaggeration.)
The only thing Asher takes seriously is eating. He already out eats his sister at every meal by a long shot. He rarely smiles while eating (it is serious business), and just keeps putting food in his mouth in a slow consistent movement until he is full.
Asher loves to growl. We can hear growling in his crib over the baby monitor, he growls at us just to see us react (he especially loves it when it irritates Zoe), and makes every animal toy of his, no matter what it is, growl. We had some growling horses the other night. I am little scared to visit his ranch.
He is such a little boy in that he has no idea what it means to be caution. He goes head first off of everything, rolls off of anything he can, and loves to wrestle. He thinks that Mom and Dad will always be there to catch him.
Here is a picture of Asher with his dad and sister in their new birthday pj's from Grandma and Grandpa Ivie.
